NIGERIA NOW ON FIFA RANKINGS

The new Fifa/Coca-Cola World ranking for February 2013 shows that Nigeria has moved up 20 places, to 30th in the world which is the country’s best position since August 2010
This follows on from a third triumph at the Africa Cup of Nations Cup that ended in South Africa on Sunday. Before the tournament began on January 19, the Super Eagles were ranked 52nd in the world and 10th in Africa.
In South Africa, the Eagles beat higher ranked teams like Cote d’Ivoire and Mali and drew with Zambia in the group stage.
“The biggest winners are teams who win competitive matches, especially against high-ranking opponents. Draws secure only limited gains, particularly in friendly matches, while defeats do not bring any points,” a Fifa fact sheet revealed.
Other movers on the African continent are beaten finalists Burkina Faso who moved from 55th to 37th while hosts South Africa moved up 25 places to 60th.   The number one team in Africa, Côte d’Ivoire moved two places to 12th.
Spain still lead the ranking table with Germany in second place, followed by Argentina and England and the ten highest ranked teams in Africa are: Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Mali, Nigeria, Algeria, Tunisia, Zambia, Central African Republic, Burkina Faso and South Africa respectively.
