The desperation for employment has landed one Nwovu in police net for alleged forgery of medical certificate, which he used to gain employment into the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State. Nwovu was given an interim employment by the hospital early this year and when the hospital administration decided to conduct a verification exercise, it led to the discovery that the MBBS certificate, which he used to get employment into the hospital, was fake.

Ebonyi State Police Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Sylvester Igbo who confirmed the arrest, said the suspect, a former medical student of Ebonyi State University, EBSU, had confessed to the crime of presenting a fake MBBS certificate of the University of Nigeria Nsukka, (UNN) for the job. According to Igbo, “One Nwovu, a suspected fake medical doctor who was employed by Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki was handed over to personnel of Department of State Services, DSS by authorities of the hospital, when they discovered he presented a fake medical certificate with which he was given appointment. Later the department now transferred the suspect to us for further investigation.

“The suspect is a native of Nnubi Ndubia in Izzi Local Government and he claimed that he was a year 4 medical student of Ebonyi State University medical school and could not go further because of financial problems. Now when he saw that his friends who started with him had graduated and were practicing, he was envious and decided to lay hands on the certificate of his friend who graduated from University of Nigeria, Nsukka. “He scanned the MBBS document and superimposed his name and used it to apply for employment at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki and he was given employment.

“When the hospital authorities were carrying out verification recently, it was then that they discovered that the medical certificate was fake and he was not a medical doctor as he claimed. We are trying to ascertain if there is a third party in the matter.” Meanwhile, detectives from the state police command headquarters also yesterday arrested another student of the Ebonyi State University for alleged robbery and rape of two female students of the institution.

The suspect, Ugochukwu was arrested, following a joint operation with the police and the vigilance group of the Ishieke campus of the university, while a manhunt has began for his alleged accomplice, Ndubuisi, who escaped on sighting the police team. According to the PPRO: “We received a distress call from the Ishieke vigilance group that there was a case of rape and armed robbery, which took place around the area. So we dispatched our team of detectives and eventually one 23-year-old student of Bio-Technology of the Faculty of Biological Sciences, Ebonyi State University was arrested, while his accomplice, a 100 level student took to his heels. “The two suspects allegedly raped two girls of the university at gunpoint and made away with the sum of N6, 000 from them, handset and other personal belongings.

And this information reached the village vigilante, who now invited the police.” Items recovered from the suspect include: one locally made pistol, three Nokia handsets, three wristwatches, two ATM cards, six passport photographs, three pairs of female slippers, one National temporary voters ID card, and one student ID card of EBSU.

ENUGU STATE GOVERNOR IS FINALLY BACK

The Governor of Enugu State, Mr. Sullivan Chime, returned to Nigeria on Thursday after 140 days sojourn abroad where he reportedly attended to his failing health.

The governor was said to have arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, from London in the early hours of the day.

Chime left the shores of the country since September 19, 2012, ostensibly on holiday but his prolonged stay abroad had attracted public angst even as many believed the governor’s health had failed. The rumour of his death indeed circulated across the country sometime ago.

There were however, conflicting reports about his whereabouts in the Federal Capital Territory.

While some people said he was at the Enugu State Governor’s Lodge, others said he was at a private residence in Asokoro.

Others also said he was at the Anambra Governor’s Lodge where he was touted to be ready to address a press conference.

However, when our correspondent visited all these addresses, Chime could not be found.

An Enugu-based lawyer, Mr. Ray Nnaji, said, “I think he is back. A lady who sat on the same aircraft with him confirmed this to the leader of Save Enugu Group, Maxi Okwu.”

 “The General Editor of Tell magazine, Adekunbi Ero, equally told me that someone close to him also boarded the same plane, British Airways, that brought Chime into the country today (Thursday),” Nnaji told our correspondent in Enugu.

Our correspondent sought out the woman who spoke to Okwu and she said, “I boarded the same flight with the Enugu State Governor. I sat close to him and even saw him greeting and chatting with a Peoples Democratic Party chieftain from Imo State.”

 “He was looking very frail and emaciated. As soon as we landed at the airport, he even walked to his car unaided, but there was a formidable security team waiting for him and he left with them.”

At the Enugu Governor’s Lodge, renovation works were ongoing, but some of the workers were not at the site but a security guard at the gate said he was not aware of the arrival of the governor.

Another man, who also came briefly to the lodge, directed our correspondent to the Anambra Governor’s Lodge.

However, a source close to the governor told our correspondent that the governor was at a private residence within Asokoro and that he would be going to Enugu in a chartered flight on Friday (today).

Also, a protocol officer at the Government House in Enugu confided in our correspondent that Chime would arrive in the state today.

“If there are no hitches, we would leave Abuja by 2am tomorrow (Friday) and get to Enugu before or by about 7a m. We are taking this step because we do not want people to besiege the airport or wait on the streets, all because they want to see the governor.

 “By the time he gets into town, he would definitely make changes in his cabinet as he has been so unhappy with the way things were done in his absence. He is so bitter that Enugu never worked while he was away.”

Meanwhile, the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party said it received the news of the return of Chime to the country with great joy.

The party said in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, that the party was happy that the governor returned in good health.

The statement read, “We sincerely thank all the functionaries of the Enugu State Government and the state PDP officers for their loyalty and commitment to the ideals of the Party and the PDP Chime-led administration.

“Furthermore, we thank the good people of Enugu State and indeed all Nigerians whose prayers ensured the successful return of the governor.

“We dare say that the love shown to the governor by all and sundry during his period of absence is a clear indication that our people appreciate the good work of the governor.

“We are confident that the governor shall consolidate on the tremendous achievements of his administration now that he is back to work.”

Also, the Save Enugu Group that sprung up in the wake of Chime’s “disappearance” on Thursday reacted to the governor’s return.

The group in a statement jointly signed by its convener, Maxi Okwu; Secretary General of the Conference on Nigerian Political Parties, Willy Ezeugwu; and a former Commissioner for Information in Enugu State, Igbonekwu Ogazimora, said,“Chime, we learnt, arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, this morning and was taken to the city. We note this coming exactly one month after we first sounded the alarm of prolonged and unexplained absence.

 “We acclaim this as falling within desired responsive action of leaders in a democracy. If the information on the unstable and frail condition of the governor is reliable, he should avoid the pitfall of trying to combine full recovery with the stress of political power play.

 “We wish to state that Chime did not deserve being hustled out of ‘gainful stay’ in good health institutions if the right things were done first and before questions arose. In that respect, we, as other good people of Enugu State stand to hold responsible the primitive liars in Government House.”

WHITHER MULTINATIONAL COMPANIES, WHITHER NIGERIA.

The term corporate responsibility means the contribution that a company provide for the community where they operate. Using telecommunication giants as a case study, I will boldly say that they have paid their dues of corporate responsibility. But the question is how? Do they pay it in such a way as to promote the Nigerian Dream?

The youth are the future of tomorrow. The last decade has seen the industry that create this leaders dwindle and walk the narrow part of infrastructural decay resulting in half-baked graduates that cannot not meet the demand of NOW in the global village. These youths are not dullard because they excel in their theoretical based studies, but when it comes to applying them, they are found wanting.

Since we have a problem, how then do we reverse this ugly trend so as to set our youths on the glorious hills of achievement? The answer that quickly comes to mind is GOVERNMENT. Of a truth, it is he basic function of government to create the vision and the fund to attain this dream. What about a scenario that they government of the day is beset with lots of troubles ranging from security (which is primary) to power etc. grappling with all these distracts govt. who then will oil the wheel that grind out graduates? That task falls squarely on the multinationals. I ask, have they been up to the task, my answer is no.

My answer is no because they have because they prioritize trivial matters over the pressing ones (misappropriation of priority). My answer is no because through their promos, they miss guide our youths which dissuade the few that want to study. Such promos include much investment in entertainment and social activities over education, investing of so much money into annual promo against upgrading our sciences labs.

In the long run, we have illiterate millionaire who influence the society negatively by their affluence, thus denting the noble pursuit of intellectual development.

By my estimation, if half of the fund that is been sunk into these promos is invested into education, our vision 20:2020 will be achieved before this set date.

My submission is that government should set up a committee to ensure that a specified percentage of every multinational company is annual disbursed to science faculties in different universities in Nigeria for upgrading of their lab because science cannot be done done on paper only. Also, science based competition should be sponsored and aired often. Young promising scientist in our schools should be sponsored to the best labs in the world rather than the trend which is all paid trip to Dubai and also that to London to watch Manchester united, that does not contribute to the growth of the country.

With these improvements in science field, a new vista of hope and development will emerge in our dear nation, NIGERIA.

This time is only special to all lions and lionesses cos its the time when pep talks, awards and most importantly ejection of students is witness. IT'S THE UNN CONVOCATION CEREMONY!!!!!!!!!!!! Gosh am so excited(mine is coming up next). a week today and i would be in several stands and canopies as i can locate to get my never ending hunger satisfied. The annual Nnewi ofala festival which held at the igwe Ken Orizu the 3rd on the 26th of november was a memorable one as Nigerias leading telecommunication network MTN financed it. The festival showcased the Nnewi culture by displaying a wide array of masquerades to the viewing of indigenes and non-indigenes of Nnewi. The festival was well attended by the great and mighty indigenes of Nnewi community in Anambra state. The Ofala festival is a festival which was started in the past and it was then the only time the Igwe who is the traditional leader is seen by his people. SOLUDO IN EFCC CUSTODY

 News reaching me says that the former central bank governor and former anambra state gubernatorial candidate Mr. Chukwuma Charles Soludo was arrested by the economic and financial crimes commission in connection with the australian polymer banknote bribery scam.
As at the moment news from a government source says Mr. Soludo is facing interrogation at the EFCC abuja office based on his role in the  bribery scam.
It is also said that some number of past and present EFCC workers are also involved in this heist and efforts to speak with inside EFCC officials has proved abortive.
